Motor City on the Move: Metro Detroit Movies

Allen Park was supposed to be the Hollywood of the East of a couple of years ago. Of course, that deal fell through and the movie business never came. There were plenty of great signs that Detroit was about to experience one of the biggest booms to its economy since the auto industry began in the 1900s.

Well, the metro Detroit region may not ever become what it was supposed to be, but the city, and the surrounding areas are being used for filming and soon, yet another big-name film will come here.

Transformers 4 was just approved by the Michigan Film Office for $20 million in incentives to film in Metro Detroit. The state of Michigan anticipates spending $81.9 million for film incentives in 2013.

Every Transformers film was shot in Detroit for scenes and this one will be no different. Not only does the film plan on shooting in Detroit, but the suburbs, especially Michigan Motion Picture Studios in Pontiac.

Now, what’s different about this film is those who will be in it. According to IMDB (Internet Movie Database), the Untitled Transformers Sequel will feature Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor. So get ready Detroit, the film is set to hire over 350 Michiganders when they come. There’s not set release date on when they will be coming, but is scheduled to be released to theaters in June of 2014.

Another film the ladies will surely be excited for is How to Catch a Monster. It’s directed by Hollywood heartthrob and The Notebook star, Ryan Gosling. He’s been spotted in Detroit lately and loves Detroit restaurant, Cafe D’Mongo’s Speakeasy.

He was in town over St. Patrick’s Day weekend and has even invited the owner of Cafe D’Mongo’s to be in his film. Other than Mr. Mongo himself in the film, IMDB lists a cast consisting of Saoirse Ronan, Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, Matt Smith, and Ben Mendelsohn.

The plot of the move: A single mother is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town.

This will be Gosling’s first movie as director. Gosling’s also been spotted in Grosse Pointe in addition to the Detroit speakeasy. There’s no set timetable on when the movie is set to be released and also has no timetable on when the film will start shooting in Detroit.

And for all you guys and girls looking to get a glimpse of both Gosling and Mendes, they aren’t around town looking for love, unless they are looking for each other, because they are dating. Still, good luck to everyone hoping for a mere glimpse of both.
