SOFTBALL: Veteran Rams too much for young Bucs

By Chris Zadorozny

A big matchup between the Flat Rock and Riverview softball teams Monday evening was important for both squads. The young, talented Bucs were looking to defeat a much older Rams squad in Riverview.

The more seasoned Rams came out on top, 4-1, behind a stellar performance from Natalia Gibson.

She threw over 100 pitches from the circle, and only allowed the Bucs six hits in the contest.

The Flat Rock scoring got started in the third inning when catcher Morgan Kaiser led off with a single. A Gibson bunt advanced her to second base, and she was a third base after a single from Breanna Keether.

Two batters later, Sam Dymon hit a double off of Riverview starter Katilin McKenzie to bring Morgan and Keether across the plate.

The Bucs were unable to respond, and the Rams scored another run in the fourth inning after bunt single by Ally Bryant, who stole second during the next at-bat and scored on a single from Carol Ostroski.

Riverview finally got on the board with a run in the fifth inning from right-fielder Isabella Roche.

After a single got the inning started, but a quick double play in the next at-bat gave the Bucs nearly no hope, but Roche stepped to plate and hit a double off of Gibson, her fifth hit of the day given up and soon scored after a single from Chloe O’Der.

Flat Rock put the game away in the next inning with another run after Keether singled to score Michelle Bodery from third. Bodery singled earlier in the inning, advanced to second on a bunt, and took third on a passed ball.

Rams head coach, Steve Pzybylo was quite pleased with the way his team performed. “All our kids can hit, one through eight can hit the ball,” said Pzybylo. “(Gibson) had a great game, a real confidence booster.”

Gibson finished the game in excellent fashion, striking out the side to earn the 4-1 win. Overall, she had seven strikeouts on the day.

“They’re (Flat Rock) a good team,” said Riverview head coach Scott Steward. “When you play a good team, you can’t make mistakes. We made some uncharacteristic mistakes.”
