It only took three matches for the Grosse Ile Red Devils to defeat the Flat Rock Rams on Monday evening.
The Red Devils started fast and continued that way, knocking off the Rams in straight sets (25-9, 25-20, 25-15).
“We came out really flat,” said Rams Coach Kimberly Papalas. “I’m happy with the way we played the second game.
The Red Devils got off to a great start in the first match, jumping out to a 12-0 lead before the Rams finally got on the board. The Rams couldn’t match that quick start by the Red Devils until the second match.
“That’ll definitely build the team’s confidence and get the momentum definitely on our side,” said Red Devils Coach Amanda Sammons.
In the second match, the Rams started out much quicker than the Red Devils. The Rams were up by five, a 6-1 score until the Red Devils made a run to tie it at six. The Red Devils went up by another three points, and didn’t look back.
The Rams weren’t giving up though, and tied it again at 17 with a great rally after being behind by seven points. The Red Devils stopped the rally at 17, and won 25-20.
It hurt the Rams and the Red Devils had the third match in the bag after an early 6-6 tie. Grosse Ile went on a six-point run to go up 20-10, and it was all but over at that point, despite a small rally by the Rams.
“Grosse Ile has a great team, they don’t make as many errors as we make, and they’ve got good hitters and good serving,” said Papalas.
Leading the way for the Red Devils, sophomore Katherine Tobin who had at least eight spikes on the night, along with junior Briana Chamberlin, who contributed at least four spikes as well.
On the Rams side of the court, on senior night, senior’s Jessica Richardson and Amy Minckiewicz contributed in the first set, along with junior Marina Steffke and sophomore Morgan Villemure in the second set.
Ending the season, the Red Devils will play first place St. Mary’s Catholic Central (SMCC) on Wednesday, while the Rams will host Monroe Jefferson for Parent’s Night, and host a doubleheader on Saturday.
