Monday’s high schools roundup: Ferndale free throws hold off Royal Oak

Royal Oak — In a key OAA Blue matchup, Ferndale and Royal Oak duked it out until the final seconds. Ferndale (7-2, 5-1) had the lead all Monday night, and thanks to some key free throws in the final seconds, it topped Royal Oak, 42-39.

“Heading into the fourth (quarter), we were down 32-22,” Royal Oak coach Brian Sopota said. “We ended up fouling, (they) made a free throw, (we) had to foul again, and (they) made a couple more free throws.”

Micaela Ellis led Ferndale with 18 points. Royal Oak’s Sam Bartelotti scored 10.

Royal Oak (6-5, 3-3) is now gearing up for its Pink Out game for Breast Cancer against visiting Berkley at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“We’ve already sold about 300 shirts for the game,” Sopota said.

Ferndale will host Southfield on the same night at 7 p.m.


Boys Basketball

Inkster Peterson-Warren Academy 42, Detroit Jalen Rose Academy 41: Eric Walker scored 13 for Peterson-Warren (3-1).

Melvindale 68, Wyandotte Roosevelt 60: Wissam Saeed scored 19 and Malike Boynton 16 for Melvindale (3-7). Tyler White 11 points for Wyandotte (6-5).

Wayne 43, Livonia Franklin 40: Travis Massey scored points and Brian Williams 10 for Wayne (3-8, 2-4 KLAA South). Adam Monroe had 21 and Nick Guest 13 for Franklin (1-11, 0-6 KLAA South).


Girls Basketball

Bloomfield Hills Roeper 32, Southfield Christian 25: Nadia Salman scored 10 for Roeper (9-1, 5-0 MIC Blue). Charity Godbold had 17 for Southfield Christian.

Dearborn Divine Child 38, Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest 30: Riley Blair scored 12 for Divine Child. Jackie Schwark had 14 for Lutheran Northwest.

Farmington Hills Harrison 51, Pontiac 14: Kristen Nelson had 11 and Katie Conrad 10 for Harrison (9-3, 5-2). Pontiac is 0-6, 0-4.

North Farmington 58, Southfield Lathrup 52: Megan Carter scored 23 and Bri Durrough 14 for North (7-8, 4-3 OAA Red). Antoinette Miller scored 19 and Deja Church 10 for Southfield (7-5, 4-2).

Novi 55, South Lyon 29: Taylor Paprika scored 17 and Terry McMahan 16 for Novi (10-3). South Lyon is 2-10.

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 49, Allen Park Cabrini 27: Nicole Difore had 13 for Notre Dame (8-3, 4-2 Catholic League AA). Cabrini is 7-6, 2-4.
