Right from the tip, Baptist Park had control and never let go. It really didn’t seem fair as the Wildcats ended the first half up 14-2, en route to a 54-29 victory over the Lutheran South Saints.
The Wildcats had full control, and finished with four players in double digit scoring, while the Saints only had two.
Although the Wildcats had control throughout the game, fouls were prevalent, and will be worked on before Friday’s game against Plymouth Christian, according to Baptist Park Coach Steve McElroy.
It was a slow start because of all the fouls, but the Wildcats had a 37-15 lead at halftime. The Saints picked away at the lead, but the points kept piling up for the Wildcats, and despite a few small surges, it was too much too early to contain for the Saints.
One of the Wildcats top players though, isn’t even in high school yet. Eight-grader Mikayla Thompson not only played in the game, but she was in the starting lineup. She finished the game with 12 points and two rebounds.
“She played great. Sometimes she plays like an eighth-grader, and other times she leads the team. She’s averaged 10 points a game this season,” said McElroy.
Thompson kept to that average by scoring 12. Although she only scored 12 points, she was all over the floor, in the paint, and helping control the passing game at the top of the key.
Along with Thompson, junior Betsy Posont had 14 points and three rebounds, junior Mikaylah LaPlante had 11 points and three rebounds and junior Rachel Weathers had 10 points and three rebounds.
For the Saints, senior Kristi Smrcka had 12 points and nine rebounds, as well as a steal. Fellow senior Marie Frank had three points and five rebounds for the Saints.
It was a powerful showing for the Wildcats, who will now face Plymouth Christian on Friday night at home at 7 p.m. McElroy knows that Wednesday night’s game was great, but his team has to be better against a faster Plymouth Christian team.
